Stigler–Becker versus Myers–Briggs: why preference-based explanations are scientifically meaningful and empirically important
نویسنده
چکیده
Economists typically object to preference-based explanations of human behavior; differences in preferences “explain everything and therefore nothing”. But this argument is only correct assuming that no empirical evidence exists to discipline preference-based explanations. In fact, over the past decade, personality psychologists have produced a robust collection of stylized facts about human preferences. While preferences are, empirically, quite stable, they are far from identical and have proven predictive power for economically interesting variables. The empirical challenge for future research is to jointly estimate the impact of preferences and constraints to obtain unbiased measures of their relative importance. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. متن کاملAn Analysis of Computing Major Students’ Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Distribution
An experiment was undertaken to study the relationship between persons’ Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality and the computing tasks. For the experiment, a group of computing majors, 68 undergraduate students, (40 underclassmen and 28 upperclassmen) and 60 graduate students pursuing masters degrees have participated. The result shows that the most common MBTI types among the students ...
متن کاملThe Case Against Type Dynamics
The type dynamics model of psychological type was examined and criticized from several perspectives. Problem areas include the following: Type dynamics has persistent logical problems and is fundamentally based on a series of category mistakes; it provides, at best, a limited and incomplete account of type-related phenomena; epistemologically, type dynamics is not based on efficacy or the prepo...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...
